Bram van Velde (1895 – 1981) was a largely self-taught Dutch painter, printmaker and illustrator who, with difficulties, achieved critical notoriety in the decades after World War II as an Abstract Expressionist artist. Bram Van Velde’s entire life revolved around his painting. He was completely independent, never possessed anything, and never had much financial success. For him, “painting is living", not a living. Interestingly, at the end of his life Bram van Velde used only three colours: black, mauve and red, as is with this lithograph, which is among his last works.
