Raoul Ubac (1910-1985) was a Belgian painter, sculptor, photographer, engraver and lithographer. He trained as an artist while traveling in Europe between 1928 and 1934, then began his career as a surrealist photographer and contributed photographic works to the Surrealist art journal "Minotaure". After the Second World War, he focused more on painting and printmaking, in a generally non-figurative Expressionist style. Ubac’s work is represented in major public collections including the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Minneapolis Institute of Art; the National Gallery of Art; and the Museum of Modern Art. He even published a collection of poems under the pseudonym Raoul Michelet.
