  • Once the largest bridge in the world, Brooklyn Bridge today, in comparison with its big neighbors reaching across the East River, seems small. But its importance in the early development of the city is great. Designed by John A. Roehling, it was executed by his son, Washington A. Roehling, when his father became paralyzed. It is interesting to note that it was officially named Brooklyn Bridge only about 19 years after its opening.
