William Sartain (1843 – 1924) was an American artist, known for the tonalism of his paintings and engravings, was the son of artist, engraver and publisher John Sartain, and brother to artist Emily Sartain.  He attended Philadelphia's Central High School, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where he was classmates and friends with artists Thomas Eakins and Charles Lewis Fussell.  His work is in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, U.S. Capitol, and National Museum of American Art.

Mathew B. Brady (1824 – 1896) was an American photographer, one of the earliest and most famous in American history.  He studied under inventor Samuel Morse, who pioneered the daguerreotype technique in America.  Brady opened his own studio in New York City in 1844, and went on to photograph 18 of the 19 American presidents from John Quincy Adams to William McKinley, most of the prominent Civil War Union Army generals, among other public figures, but is best known for his photographs of the Civil War, making Mathew Brady the first prominent American photojournalist.
