John Speed (1552-1629) was an English cartographer and historian, known for his production of a series of county maps of England and Wales. He was born in Farndon, Cheshire, and later moved to London where he worked as a tailor and a seller of printed books. Speed had a keen interest in history and geography, and in the late 16th century, he began producing maps and historical works. Speed's most famous works are his county maps, which he started producing in the early 17th century. These maps were highly detailed and accurate, and were some of the first to include town plans and illustrations of important landmarks. Speed's maps were popular and influential, and they remain important historical documents today. In addition to his cartographic work, Speed also wrote historical accounts of England and other countries, which were well-regarded in his time.
